Learning through Inuit Art

IHT is developing nine new arts-related curriculum-based education programs for Grades 1–9. These programs are being designed to meet Department of Education curriculum requirements and to become official educational resources. . The programs are intended to build awareness of the NIHC as it is being developed, and are based upon the Government of Nunavut Inuit Fine Art Collections currently being managed by the Winnipeg Art Gallery. They are bilingual (Inuktitut and English) and incorporate many IQ Principles. In all, the programs highlight over 130 works of Inuit art from all Nunavut regions and many different media.

Details

Programs are comprised of three modules for six classes, tailored to each grade.

Module 1: Introduction to Heritage Centres, GN Inuit Art Collection (inquiry-based discussion with slides of heritage centres, exhibitions and Inuit art works)
Module 2: Do an art activity (guided, hands-on grade-appropriate activity)
Module 3: Create an exhibit (collaborative between students, with artists and elders as an option)

Programs provide suggestions for community involvement and are flexible with add-ons and variations.
